The Role of Conversation Design in the Application of AI

A shockingly straightforward report on the "progress" of AI and it's applications was published this week by the AI Now Institute. Their assessment is blunt:

AI is widening inequality, placing information and control in the hands of those who already have power and further disempowering those who don’t.

The issues could hardly be more serious. We have the opportunity now to help correct this. As designers of the interactions that people have with AI systems, do we have an obligation to help avoid negative impact? It's one thing to create an "enjoyable" customer experience. It might be quite another to actively protect and empower humans against physical, emotional, and financial harm.

What will we do?
